Lacquer ware production in Duyen Thai, Thuong Tin, Ha Noi

Lacquer is traditionally created from the sap of a sumac which grows in the uplands. The transparent sap flows from an incision in the tree. It is then treated until it turns black or the brown color as of “cockroach wings”. The background material for lacquer coating includes wood, baked earth, stone, copper, rattan, woven bamboo.
Through just existing for more than 200 years so far, but the lacquer profession of Ha Thai village, Duyen Thai commune, Thuong Tin district, Hanoi has affirmed its name in international market. According to the researchers, the lacquer traditional has exited since 16th century in Ha Thai. Even though this is not the first ancestor for the lacquer professtion, Ha Thai lacquer is still highly appreciated because there are many talented, skillful and creative artisans here.
Craft Link is supporting 4 different lacquer workshops in Ha Thai. In addition to helping them in developing new products and marketing, Craft Link also helps them to search for the clean material sources and improve working tools, working condition to protect artisans’ health and environment.
