Traditional Villages

Bamboo Dragonfly at Tay Phuong Pagoda village, Thach Xa commune, Thach That, Hanoi.

The bamboo dragonfly workshop of Mr. Nguyen Van Tai is located at Tay Phuong Pagoda village, Thach Xa commune, Thach That, Hanoi. Dragonfly artisans are all residents of the village. After 22 years of production & testing, the group created many beautiful dragonfly styles and they are especially capable of self-balancing.
The first production stage is selecting and processing materials. Bamboo is well dried to avoid termites and is cut, split according to the required dimension. The dragonfly body is cut into shape and thinly stripped to keep only bamboo cover part to create curvature for the tail. Then they drill holes to install wings. Dragonfly wings are very accurately cut with rudimentary tools. The wings are polished and sanded. The wings are fitted into the body and meticulously adjusted. After the formation is complete, the dragonfly is coated with a base color. The skilled artisans decorate dragonflies with rich and vivid patterns. Then the dragonflies are let dry completely for the whole week.
Mr. Tai would like to expand production scale, to create more jobs for people in the village. Craft Link is currently assisting this group in developing new dragonfly designs, to help the group introduce more bamboo dragonfly products to domestic and international markets.
